Locally rooted wind power in Åmål

Åmål

The area being assessed for wind power is located in rolling terrain in Åmål Municipality, Sweden. The area consists mainly of managed production forest and includes small watercourses, a few bogs, and forest roads. There are neither agricultural areas nor residential buildings within the assessment area, which lies at an elevation of 125–275 meters above sea level.

About the Project

One of the most important factors when selecting a location for wind power is wind availability—areas with sufficiently high annual average wind speeds are prioritized. Another key factor is the ability to connect production to the power grid. The location selection undergoes a thorough and comprehensive multi-stage assessment process.

In recent years, Åmål Municipality has worked on a new comprehensive plan, Översiktsplan 2050, which was adopted on September 26, 2023. The area being assessed for wind power is not within any land designated for other purposes in the municipality’s land-use map. There is also no currently valid detailed development plan for the area. Aneo therefore considers the area open to environmental assessment from a planning perspective.

A supplement to the comprehensive plan—“Vindbruk Dalsland”—prepared by the municipalities of Mellerud, Dals-Ed, Färgelanda, Bengtsfors, and Åmål, was adopted in Åmål in 2011. Åmål chose not to designate specific areas for wind power in the supplement, and no dedicated wind power areas are designated in Översiktsplan 2050 either.

Based on the initial assessments, which do not indicate direct conflicts between the planned activity and other interests, the relevant area has been considered suitable for further study. On this basis, Aneo has decided to proceed with the project assessment—to determine suitability for wind power development and evaluate whether there is a basis for applying for an environmental permit.

Why a wind farm right here?

Good wind conditions

The area is located in elevated, hilly terrain with consistently good wind conditions throughout the year. This provides a basis for stable and efficient power production.

Proximity to the power grid

A prerequisite for profitable wind power is the ability to deliver electricity where it is needed. The area is favorably located with regard to existing grid infrastructure, which reduces connection costs.

Local energy production

Sweden needs more renewable power—and it is advantageous to produce it close to where it is consumed. A wind farm in Åmål contributes to the energy supply in the SE3 area and strengthens local and regional security of supply.

Why Aneo?

The renewable energy group Aneo was established in the fall of 2022 through a collaboration between the energy company TrønderEnergi and the investment fund HitecVision. We have just over 180 employees, with our headquarters in Trondheim.

Aneo is built on 70 years of experience in the development and operation of large power projects. Aneo owns and operates 13 wind farms and two solar power plants in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, with production in all three countries. Additionally, the group holds a stake in Sunna Group AB, which develops, builds, and operates solar power plants in Sweden. Aneo also has several subsidiaries in areas such as energy services, mobility, and development.

We have extensive experience collaborating with municipalities, where we have built strong relationships with both residents, politicians, and the administration. Together with local authorities, we are creating the energy solutions of the future, with a focus on safety and presence in the local community.

Aneo operations building in Åfjord municipality

One of the things that sets us apart from most of our competitors is that when Aneo seeks to build a wind power plant in a Norwegian municipality, it's with long-term intentions in mind, not to sell the project or power plant onward. We invest to build, build to own, and own to operate. This means that we are here now, during any construction process, and of course, every single day throughout the power plant's lifespan.
