The seafood company Pelagia is adopting new technology and reducing large amounts of climate emissions at the herring oil factory in Måløy.

Pelagia has entered into a significant agreement with the Nordic renewable energy group Aneo to purchase steam-producing heat pump technology and service services for the fish oil factory in Måløy. The agreement is a very central part of Pelagia's climate initiative, where they plan to invest around 90 million kroner in climate solutions over a 10-year period.
The technology to be adopted will electrify the cooking process at the factory in Måløy, helping to reduce energy consumption during the cooking of fish oil by about 70 percent.

- Today, a lot of energy from Pelagia Måløy goes straight into the sea as waste heat. This energy cannot be reused. Going forward, we will recover seven million kilowatt-hours of waste heat and convert it into process steam, says Michael Bantle, Technical Director at Aneo Industry.

Initially, the ambition is to reduce the use of fossil heating oil by 10 to 12 million kilowatt-hours by using advanced heat pump technology.

- The solution we will adopt at the Måløy factory significantly reduces CO2 emissions. Pelagia will achieve significant energy efficiency, says Bantle.

Significant Reduction

Pelagia Måløy produces fish meal and fish oil, which are used, among other things, in feed for the aquaculture industry. Every single day, the factory, located between Bergen and Ålesund, processes up to 1,500 tons of raw materials. Therefore, the energy demand is large, and Aneo's heat pump technology contributes to greener and more energy-efficient production.

- What we are now implementing together with Aneo and subcontractors is an exciting project involving a high degree of innovation. Steam-producing heat pumps are an important and correct step to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, while we significantly increase efficiency compared to the conventional use of oil and gas boilers. We are very pleased with the choice we have made, says Live Spurkland, CTO at Pelagia.

Great Potential

Pelagia operates four other factories in Norway and is part-owner of an additional factory where similar solutions can be used. In addition, Pelagia has five factories in the UK that can also use the same technology and process as the one to be delivered in Måløy.

- The potential at the factory in Måløy alone is 40 million kilowatt-hours. We see opportunities to continue electrification with this type of heat pump technology for the other processes in the factory, says Spurkland.

Recovery Plans

In Norway, about 20 TWh of waste heat is released each year without being used for anything sensible. This is a paradox in today's society where there is a scarcity of energy. 20 TWh corresponds to about 15 percent of all the electricity used in Norway in 2022.
The Nordic renewable energy group Aneo is heavily investing in helping the industry recover this waste heat.

- Our entire business model is structured around providing technology and services that offer savings, both economically and environmentally, for customers. We aim to help the industry and society achieve their sustainability goals, says Ann Merethe Lysø Sommerseth, CEO of Aneo Industry.

50,000 Households

Aneo aims to manage a minimum of 1 TWh of thermal energy (equivalent to the electricity consumption of about 50,000 Norwegian households) by 2030 through market growth both in Norway and internationally.

- Aneo Industry's customers are businesses within the food industry, chemical industry, and paper industry in Norway and Europe. Several countries in Europe have limited net capacity while needing increased electrification.

- We believe the combination of our technology and business model will be very important for the industry in Norway and Europe to have a quicker and easier path towards green transformation. Moreover, we will address a major societal problem by contributing to waste heat being reused and replaced to meet market demands, points out Lysø Sommerseth.

Felleskjøpet First

Felleskjøpet Agri is a pilot customer with Aneo Industry and will start using this type of heat pump technology at its feed factory at Skansen in Trondheim in September. An exciting connection is that Felleskjøpet is also a customer of Pelagia and uses ingredients from the fish oil factory in Måløy in its feed production.

- In this way, our feed acquires a significantly greater climate value for our customers in the grand scheme of things, says Vebjørn Nilsen, Technical Manager at Felleskjøpet Agri.

Facts, Aneo's Delivery to Pelagia Måløy:

  • 4.4 MW steam-producing heat pump system.

  • Delivery of 10-12 GWh of emission-free thermal energy.

  • The facility will be in full operation from April 2024 and will be operated through Aneo Industry's service platform.

  • Subcontractors are Svensk License Svetsning AB and EPCON Evaporation Technology AS.

Facts, Aneo

  • The Nordic renewable company Aneo was established in 2022 and is owned by TrønderEnergi and HitecVision.

  • Aneo's headquarters is located in Trondheim.

  • Aneo Industry is a subsidiary of the Aneo group that delivers steam-producing high-temperature heat pumps. The solution provides significant benefits in terms of energy efficiency, reduces large amounts of CO2 emissions, and frees up net capacity for the customer and society at large.

Facts, Pelagia AS

  • Pelagia is one of the world's leading seafood groups with 28 factories in Norway, Denmark, UK/IR, and Ukraine.

  • Pelagia Måløy Fish Oil Factory has a history dating back to 1937 as a processor of fresh by-products from pelagic consumer plants. The final product is fish oil and fish meal, which is predominantly sold and further processed into feed for fish and animals. The factory is part of a value chain where by-products from the fish industry are made into feed for pets and aquaculture fish.
